It is strange to be asked to paint someone’s portrait, to try to capture a person and recreate the essence of that person onto a flat surface. Alice came to sit for a group of artists and was a wonderful subject. This is quite a large – life size – portrait. I prefer to paint fairly large and to be able to use wide powerful brush strokes.

One of the most difficult aspects of portraiture for me is being allowed to really look at someone’s face! From our childhood we are taught not to stare – it’s rude to stare! So to look really closely into a face is rather intimidating!
